Imagine a world in which only 500 titles are published every year. That's the world you're recommending here. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;p&gt;Selling below cost is at least technically illegal in the U.S. I hope you'll forgive the ABA for pointing that out.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;p&gt;The big boxes you're so enthusiastic about have no loyalty to the book business. They would exit it tomorrow without a backward glance. If they severely damage not only the indies but also B&amp;amp;N and Borders, who are even more vulnerable to this kind of thing than the indies, where will you go for books? Amazon? OK--where will you go to browse? ...
