I'd been really digging Love Dog, and to a lesse extent, Crying & Golden Age, but I hadn't really listened to the rest of it.

Reading you reminded me I'd been meaning to give the rest of it a try- and bloody hell! I only got 4 hours sleep because I stayed up all night with different songs on repeat.

Wolf Like Me is the best sex song I've ever heard. Family Tree is like if Coldplay had an interesting producer and Chris Martin learnt to write lyrics that weren't inane and vague (and I like Coldplay, but I do tend to tune out the lyrics).

Mr Grieves- hah- great singing, but not completely smooth or technically perfect- Indie Rock singing at its best.

Young Liars- I can't describe why I like this song but I know I love it.

And I haven't even had time to get a copy of Desparate Youths...Hopefully I can get a copy at the nearest independent store today.

Anyway, thanks Ta-Nehisi- I never would have tried their music if you hadn't recommended it. Really glad I did.

An excellent song off an excellent album. Did you see them on the Colbert Report? My wife found that clip floating around. Good times.

We saw them live a few years back - still my favorite live show. They were nuts. My review if anyone is curious:

I think it's just because I've been shifting away from rock lately, but this particular piece doesn't grab me. With that said, 'Crying' is absolute gold.

That is my order for favorite to least favorite songs on the album. However, this doesn't really indict any one song since the whole album is phenomenal. Return to Cookie Mountain is still a bit better, in my opinion. TVOTR are the best band in America if you ask me.

Coldplay is hip-hop? Quoi?

Anyway, I love that people love TV on the Radio. Because they seem to me like a band that most people shouldn't get, but the Internet age graced them with a bigger audience than they'd ever get being dicked around by corporations and ignored on the (actual) radio.

Plus I love that they sound like the one band that didn't stop listening to Radiohead records after The Bends. I love genre-hopping that makes your music sound bolder, rather than too dressed-up. Also: rhythm, rhythm, rhythm!

Y'know, that one just kinda sneaks up on you. And I say this as someone who has the attention span of a gnat. Usually, if a song doesn't grab me within about 10 seconds, it's a gonner. Guess I'm in the right mood for this. Thanks for posting it!

Well,

I'm throwing it out there. They are Hip-Hop! They are Hip-Hop in a stronger since that Coldplay is Hip-Hop, the way Nina Simone is Hip-Hop, the way Coltrane is Hip-Hop.

I've been digging these guy since my wife (then fiancee) put me on to them in 2004 when she was living in the Clinton Hills section of Brooklyn. I dig this album (copped them all) but the 1st LP blew my effing mind. Track one, "The Wrong Way" (peep the gospel music feel) and track two "Staring at the Sun"...ahhh words can't describe. Oh, and "Ambulance" was our wedding song!

These guys are the best. It's true that it's hard to categorize them, but gosh isn't it time more bands start actually CREATING music instead of copying popular trends? I would give anything to be handed a stack of albums that I can't figure out or throw into a genre.

For all you that dig these guys, check out BLK JKS, I believe they are from South Africa, and they do a great job of mixing Afro-beat, rock, soul together.

Yeah, I don't even really disagree with you. They do use a lot of different sounds, and it doesn't really fit into the normal 'rock' genre. I like Bruce's description of "beyond genre." I don't mind when people try to put them into some type of 'black music' category, but I don't think it really fits even though there are obviously some influences there. Most hip hop heads I know REALLY like TVOTR.

I've been reading too much TNC. Listen to me talking about 'black music.'

Stacy : Well, yeah, I wasn't confusing them with hip-hop. Yes, it's rock. But wow. Some of it is prog-rock, some of it is alt-rock, some of it is soul, some of it (if you listen to the catalog) is experimental electronica... none of it really resembles 'classic' rock... the closest comparison I can come up with is Radiohead... which I don't think does it justice... thus my comment... Rock is too huge a term for me.

This album will always remind me of the 2008 election, as I pretty much had it on repeat throughout my life from late Sept through November.

I think Stork and Owl is one the best songs I have heard in a long while.

Ahhh, it's been a while since a good TVOTR post. Well done. Although I love this entire album, I probably love this song a bit less than the rest of it. I realize I'm in the minority with that opinion.

I do agree with Gramsci. Even though thy are quite innovative, they really are simply a rock band. Let's not over think it because of their racial make up.

This is one of the hardest bands to categorize. Truly a fusion (if that name wasn't already taken).
