A prologue. Ok, she apparently whiffed against Katie Couric. ("let me get back to you.") Look-- I don't think that much of the woman (I've compared the pick to marrying a stripper) but she has a 40% chance of becoming VP. She can only get better through practice-- not by hiding.

It's like not letting your parents meet your new wife-- suggests she's got something to hide.

She whiffed in one at bat in AAA pitching (Charlie Gibson). She can sort of hit batting practice pitching (Hannity). How do people gain confidence in the VP nominee? I mean Wolf Blitzer is not exactly Tim Russert or Ted Koppel.

It's not like her negatives can get much higher.

I think John McCain is simply trying to prove that there is no situation so dire that he can't, somehow, overreact to it.

"Hey, guys, this is pretty bad. Maybe we should suspend this whole democratic enterprise for a while? I mean, we probably won't have to skip the actual election, just the parts where we talk to the voters. Well, that is, unless this crisis drags out or gets worse, or maybe if I am still clearly losing in 5 weeks."

I could care less about Ahmadinejad and the number of press conferences he's given as compared to anyone. Furthermore, could care less about whether Palin has held an official press conference. What does concern me is she hasn't taken any questions, in any setting, since the Gibson interview (hannity doesn't count).

It's kind of like an arranged marriage...no information required...You'll love her, or learn to love her, not that it matters.

Ummm... This far into the financial crisis and McCain is suspending his campaign and won't debate tomorrow? New thread?

Will note that I feel both must show up to vote on the financial package--Biden too--but this is taking it to a truly weird place. Not that it can't work, but it may work better than anything that involves McCain or Palin talking.

I get the feeling that Palin likes the election process and the thought of attaining higher office but she has no interest in the little things like foreign, economic, healthcare and environmental policy.

Hello everyone! This is a woman who thinks the dinosaurs walked the earth with humans. Why do we even ask her for a press conference when the truth is that she really has nothing to say. Palin is a sad gimmick.

The McCain camp knows she is a nut who appeals to some folks who think with their hypothalamus (located in our cerebral cortex it is the most primitive part of the brain).

By not allowing press conferences or unscripted questions of any kind this is the campaigns way of acknowledging this.

So we've established that Achmedinijad is tougher than Palin and less afraid of looking a fool, even after everyone laughed at his "no gay people" line. (A better example of the wonders of free speech I have rarely seen. Undercut by letting him speak, not by holding him silent.) Why is anyone still taking the Republicans seriously?

How does Ach compare to McCain on press conferences?

Yeah, and McCain doesn't believe "justice" is being done in light of a lack of "fairness" on the part of the media.

But Palin isn't the "veil of ignorance", though she is clearly ignorant. The veil is McCain's well-honed reputation and conviviality with the press.

Sully's definitely gotten a raw deal from Kurtz over at the WaPo publishing his private emails to the McCain campaign. I read that Kurtz piece - what a hack that guy is.

OTOH, Sully definitely went way too far into the baby nonsense. One post probably would've been enough.

I think you're confused, TNC. That qparticular uote isn't from Rawls character on The Wire, but rather from John Rawls in the prologue to A Theory of Justice...
